HP’s Defective Media Retention (DMR) service

Increasingly organisations need to adequately protect & stay in control of their data maintaining compliance with stringent governance policies.

HP’s Defective Media Retention (DMR) service is designed to help customers meet business goals around data compliance whilst enabling them to reduce cost.

Why staying in control of data is vitally important to organisations

DMR

Whilst organisations have procedures in place to ensure their data is erased from a defective hard drive, if this is not done adequately, there are a number of tools and techniques which still can make data accessible to a third party. Organisations who allow defective disks with confidential data to be removed from their direct control, could face penalties under international and local industry regulations now in effect, in the event data is not adequately erased & falls into the wrong hands.

Are customers entitled to keep a defective disk?

Not under the standard terms & conditions of the product warranty as warranty just covers the cost of a replacement part(s). Any defective part(s) must then be returned to the manufacturer for repair or recycling. Charges apply for non returned parts.

Prior to HP’s packaged DMR service, what options were available to customers who had to retain defective disks?

Traditionally customers needing to retain a defective hard drive(s) would be forced to purchase a replacement disk(s). This would however be managed as a separate transaction, creating both additional administration as well as unplanned cost to the customer.

How does HP’s DMR service benefit customers?

This service enables customers to retain a defective disk(s) without the need for them to raise a separate and unplanned purchase requisition to cover the cost of a replacement disk. By purchasing this feature up front as part of an enhanced warranty package, customers are able to fix the total cost of their IT investment up front, in turn improving their overall return on IT investment as well as simplifying their administration.

How cost effective is DMR?

The cost of HP’s DMR service compares exceptionally favourably when compared to traditional methods of purchasing replacement hard drives on an adhoc basis. For example a 24x7x4hr hardware on-site response Care Pack service for a new BL465 server costs approximately £350 for 3 years cover. With HP’s DMR included the same service costs approximately £400. So for an incremental cost of circa £16 per year, less than the cost of purchasing a replacement disk, customers can be assured of peace of mind and protection from unplanned operational cost.

How to purchase HP DMR

HP’s DMR service is optional and can be purchased in the form of an HP Care Pack or HP contract service from Computacenter.

Which HP products is DMR available on?
